Kazakhstan has entered a new era in medical innovation with its first-ever remote robotic surgery, successfully performed at the Kazakh Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology (KazNIIOIR). The groundbreaking operation used the Sagebot SR2000 robotic system to remove a kidney tumor while preserving the organ and its functionality.

The two-hour procedure was remotely led by Dr. Li Xue Sun from Beijing, China, utilizing advanced telemedicine technology. Meanwhile, Kazakh surgeon Khusan Umurzakov supervised the surgery on-site in Almaty, ensuring seamless collaboration across borders.

“This is a major leap forward not only for Kazakhstan but for the entire region,” said Dr. Umurzakov. “We’ve demonstrated that distance is no longer a barrier when it comes to life-saving procedures.”

Robotic surgery offers several advantages over traditional methods, including minimal invasiveness, enhanced surgical precision, and 3D visualization. These features contribute to faster recovery times and a lower risk of complications for patients.

The success of this operation paves the way for more advanced procedures in Kazakhstan. According to the Ministry of Health, KazNIIOIR plans to carry out an additional 50 robotic surgeries in urology, gynecology, and abdominal specialties over the coming months.

Collaborative efforts are also underway with medical centers in China and Turkey to expand the application of robotic-assisted cancer treatments.

Kazakhstan’s achievement follows a global trend in the rise of robotic surgery, including Saudi Arabia’s recent milestone—the world’s first fully robotic heart transplant on a 16-year-old patient.

As Kazakhstan continues to invest in cutting-edge healthcare, this historic surgery not only sets a national precedent but also signals the country’s growing role in the future of global medicine.
