A state-of-the-art hospital is under construction in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, marking a significant step in transforming the iconic tourist destination into a hub for world-class healthcare and medical tourism.

The project, led by Eagle Real Estate Investment Trust (Eagle REIT), aims to provide top-tier medical services to both local residents and international patients. Initially set to open with 36 beds, the hospital will eventually expand to 108 beds, offering comprehensive care through advanced surgical theatres and specialized departments.

“Eagle REIT is developing a premium hospital facility here in Victoria Falls,” said Bevin Ngara, managing director of Fidelity Asset Management. “The facility will offer world-class services, including surgical theatres and specialist care.”

Beyond healthcare delivery, the hospital is expected to drive broad economic and infrastructural benefits. Its presence will enhance the capacity of Victoria Falls International Airport, allowing it to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft critical for medical evacuations and international patient transfers.

“This hospital will boost the capacity of Victoria Falls International Airport, paving the way for wide-bodied aircraft, crucial for medical emergencies,” Ngara added. “It will also attract more international travellers, stimulate the local economy, create jobs, and bring in foreign currency.”

The facility is being developed in partnership with HealthShare, a South African healthcare operator experienced in managing high-end medical centers across the continent. While Eagle REIT owns the infrastructure, HealthShare will oversee daily operations.

City officials, including Councillor Tonderai Mutasa, have embraced the development for its broader social and economic potential.

“Beyond direct medical benefits, this development promotes cultural exchange, competitive pricing for procedures, and a unique opportunity for patients to combine treatment with tourism,” Mutasa noted.

As medical tourism continues to grow globally, Victoria Falls is strategically positioning itself as a leader in this emerging sector, blending health, travel, and investment into one vibrant offering.
