In a groundbreaking advancement for global medicine, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has successfully performed the world’s first robotic intracranial tumor resection, marking a major milestone in the evolution of neurosurgery.
The pioneering procedure involved the robotic removal of a 4.5-centimeter brain tumor from a 68-year-old patient who had been suffering from severe headaches and cognitive decline. In an unprecedented outcome, the patient was discharged fully conscious within 24 hours, recovering nearly four times faster than patients undergoing traditional brain surgery.
Dr. Homoud Al-Dahash, KFSHRC consultant for skull base tumors and the lead surgeon, emphasized the transformative impact of robotic precision.
“The patient’s same-day discharge, fully conscious and without complications, represents a new benchmark for neurosurgical innovation,” he said.
Using a 3D optical system and image-guided navigation technology, the surgical team was able to view and remove the tumor with unmatched accuracy while preserving vital brain structures. The robotic arms provided exceptional stability, eliminated hand tremors, and enabled microscopic precision impossible with conventional tools.
