Chile is actively considering closer engagement with the BRICS+ group, viewing it as a potential avenue for advancing its political and commercial diversification strategy. Speaking to the press, Chilean Under-Secretary of Foreign Relations Gloria de la Fuente confirmed that the government remains open to evaluating future membership in the bloc.

“Chile will be available to continue evaluating these possibilities,” de la Fuente said during a press conference, responding to questions about the country’s interest in joining BRICS. She emphasized that participation in recent BRICS forums reflects international recognition of Chile’s institutional strength and its growing global presence.

While Chile has not yet committed to joining, the government acknowledges that alliances like BRICS offer opportunities for fair and mutually beneficial cooperation. The Vice Minister highlighted the importance of transitioning away from raw material exports toward the development of value-added industries.

“We need partners who invest in clean technologies and help us add value to our resources within the country,” she stated.

Chile’s interest in the BRICS bloc aligns with a broader regional trend toward multipolar cooperation, particularly among nations in the Global South seeking more equitable trade relationships. Leaders like Colombia’s President Petro have also expressed openness to working with the group, particularly its banking system.

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric has confirmed his intention to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit in July, further signaling the country’s growing interest in the bloc. While a timeline for a final decision has not been announced, Chile appears poised to deepen its ties with BRICS if the move supports long-term national interests.

“We accept invitations of this nature with great interest,” said de la Fuente. “Chile is indeed seen not only as a political partner but also as a reliable commercial one.”
