Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev recently chaired a meeting to discuss the creation of a BRICS Grain Exchange, a project aimed at boosting global food security. The initiative, supported by the BRICS agricultural ministers in 2024, is expected to strengthen the position of the BRICS nations in the global agricultural market.
During the meeting, officials explored options for establishing the exchange and discussed its operations, including interactions with trading platforms, producers, and grain exporters.
Patrushev emphasized that BRICS countries account for nearly half of the world’s grain production and consumption, which makes them a pivotal force in shaping global agricultural markets. The exchange will enable these nations to form independent price indicators, allowing for a more accurate assessment of agricultural product values worldwide.
The creation of the BRICS Grain Exchange aligns with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 2024 directive to explore this initiative, which was first proposed by the Union of Grain Exporters. Patrushev reiterated that the new trading platform would promote fairer pricing and help stabilize food supplies globally, particularly in regions dependent on BRICS grain exports.
An interdepartmental working group, led by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, has been tasked with developing detailed proposals for the exchange’s formation. By fostering greater cooperation within the BRICS bloc, the exchange is expected to contribute significantly to global food security and offer more transparency in the agricultural market.
