China has announced the discovery of a new major oil field in the Bohai Sea, marking the seventh such find since 2019 in the country’s largest offshore crude oil production base. According to TV BRICS partner Global Times, the newly identified Qinhuangdao 29-6 Oilfield contains proven reserves of around 100 million tonnes, reinforcing China’s offshore oil and gas supply at a time of global energy uncertainty.

The oil field, operated by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), is located in the central Bohai Sea and lies within shallow Neogene geological formations. Tests show that a single well can produce approximately 370 tonnes of crude oil per day, highlighting the site’s strong development potential.

CNOOC officials said the discovery was made possible through innovative hydrocarbon migration and accumulation models tailored for shallow slope zones. This approach challenges long-held assumptions that such areas merely serve as transit pathways rather than zones of large-scale resource accumulation.

“The discovery demonstrates the resilience and innovative potential of domestic oil and gas exploration in China,” said Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University. “It directly enhances domestic oil supply capacity and reduces dependence on imported petroleum.”

The announcement comes as the Bohai Oilfield sets new production records. CNOOC recently reported that the field produced more than 40 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2025 alone. With over 60 active oil and gas fields, cumulative crude output from the Bohai Sea has now surpassed 600 million tonnes, with annual production growth averaging 5 percent over the past five years.

China’s progress mirrors broader resource exploration efforts across BRICS countries. Kazakhstan recently identified a large rare earth deposit with high industrial potential, while Egypt announced a new natural gas field in its Western Desert, expected to add around 15 billion cubic feet to national reserves.

Together, these discoveries underline the strategic push by emerging economies to strengthen energy and resource security through domestic exploration and advanced extraction technologies.
