By creating jobs and fostering skills development initiatives, the solar industry in South Africa is not only shaping a sustainable future for all South Africans whose homes and businesses is powering but also grows into an important economic driver,
The year that has just ended has laid the foundation for a brighter and greener future of the country which increased its total solar PV capacity to 8.97 GW, 11.9% more comparing to 2023 marking the growth of the industry mirrored in the notable achievements.
“With almost 500 MW of utility-scale projects under construction and 375 MW scheduled to come online in 2025, the future of solar in South Africa looks incredibly promising,” said Rethabile Melamu, the CEO of the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA).
According to Melamu, SAPVIA foresees growth in the interest in solar plus storage systems as well as significant changes in the energy storage sector.
“Additionally, microgrids will become increasingly popular, particularly in rural and remote areas where grid access remains limited. The adoption of rooftop solar for residential and commercial buildings will continue to grow as electricity prices rise and consumers seek ways to reduce dependence on the grid,” he noted.
