Egypt and Mozambique have signed a landmark memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a regional pharmaceutical logistics hub serving the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The agreement was formalized at the Presidential Palace in Maputo, with Egyptian Ambassador to Mozambique, Mohamed Farghal, in attendance.

The partnership aims to leverage Mozambique’s strategic location on the Indian Ocean to create an efficient medicine distribution network for SADC countries. According to officials, the initiative will begin with the logistics center and later expand to include a pharmaceutical packaging plant.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Hossam Maqsoud, CEO of Dawah Pharmaceuticals, and Joao Machatine, Executive Coordinator of the Central Office for Reforms and Strategic Projects of the Mozambican Presidency. The agreement also covers training programs, skills transfer, technology sharing, and capacity building for Mozambican professionals.

Ambassador Farghal welcomed the cooperation, emphasizing Egypt’s commitment to strengthening African partnerships in healthcare and trade.

“This project represents a new step in advancing intra-African cooperation. By investing in skills and logistics, Egypt and Mozambique can help ensure more reliable access to vital medicines across the SADC region,” he stated.

The Egyptian delegation also attended the Diplomatic Forum on Tourism and Investment in Africa, held in Maputo, and toured the Cemento Forca factory in Matola, highlighting broader opportunities for bilateral cooperation beyond the pharmaceutical sector.

This initiative reflects Egypt’s growing role as a regional partner in Africa’s healthcare supply chain while reinforcing Mozambique’s ambition to become a regional hub. Together, the two nations aim to improve drug availability, reduce reliance on imports from outside the continent, and drive sustainable development through regional collaboration.
