Iran has secured its place among the world’s top ten nations in the use of radiopharmaceuticals for medical diagnosis and treatment, marking a major achievement in healthcare innovation. The announcement was made by Dr. Ramazan Ahadi, member of the Board of Directors of the Iranian Society of Nuclear Medicine, during the Iran Med 2025 exhibition, as reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
Dr. Ahadi emphasized that radiopharmaceuticals have transformed modern medicine by offering precise diagnostic imaging and effective treatment options for numerous diseases.
“Currently, around 400 medical centres across the country use domestically produced radiopharmaceuticals to treat patients,” he said, noting Iran’s growing independence from imported medical isotopes.
He further explained that nuclear medicine procedures have become safer and more efficient over time. “With minimal injection of radiopharmaceuticals, diagnostic accuracy improves while treatments become faster and less invasive, with fewer side effects,” Dr. Ahadi added.
Since its introduction in the 1960s, nuclear medicine in Iran has evolved from simple thyroid studies to advanced imaging and therapeutic applications. Today, the nation boasts more than 200 specialized centers equipped with SPECT and PET/CT systems. The Pars Isotope Company plays a central role in domestic production, ensuring a steady supply of vital radiopharmaceuticals.
Despite ongoing international sanctions and financial constraints, Iran continues to expand research in nuclear medicine, including projects in theranostics, AI integration, and the development of new radiopharmaceuticals. Experts note that increased collaboration and investment could further enhance Iran’s global standing in this fast-growing medical field.
With strong infrastructure and expanding expertise, Iran’s advancements in nuclear medicine underscore its commitment to scientific innovation and self-sufficiency in healthcare.
