Iran’s historic Palangan village has gained international recognition after being highlighted as a model for sustainable tourism at a recent BRICS meeting in Brazil, the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Ministry announced on May 12.
Situated in western Kurdestan Province, Palangan is known for its distinctive stepped architecture and strong preservation of Kurdish cultural traditions. The village was presented during a core session of the BRICS summit, attended by key member states including China, Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa, as well as Iran and observer nations like the UAE and Indonesia.
A short film showcasing Palangan’s picturesque landscape and unique village design captivated attendees, placing the spotlight on Iran’s community-based tourism strategies. Mostafa Fatemi, Director General of Domestic Tourism Development, described Palangan as “a successful symbol” of sustainable tourism that harmonizes cultural preservation with environmental stewardship.
“In recent years, the ministry has prioritized villages with both natural and cultural value,” Fatemi stated. “Palangan represents our broader effort to promote eco-conscious growth through active community participation.”
The village’s recognition at the BRICS forum reflects Iran’s strategic focus on integrating local heritage with tourism development. Palangan is also one of eight Iranian nominees for the 2025 Best Tourism Villages global project, further underlining its importance as a sustainable tourism model.
As global interest in responsible travel grows, Palangan’s showcase marks a significant milestone in positioning Iran’s rural heritage on the world tourism map.
