Trump Escalates Trade War, Threatens New 50% Tariffs on China

Meanwhile, in Europe, the European Union expressed its readiness to negotiate with the US regarding the tariffs

President Donald Trump has announced that the United States is prepared to impose new tariffs of up to 50% on Chinese goods, a significant escalation in the ongoing trade war between the two countries. This move comes after Beijing retaliated with its own 34% tariffs on US imports, which Trump called a violation of fair trade practices.

Trump emphasized that the new tariffs would take effect if China does not reverse its 34% tariff increase by Tuesday, April 8th, 2025. The President warned that if Beijing fails to comply, the US would implement the additional tariffs starting April 9th. He also made it clear that any planned meetings between US and Chinese officials would be canceled.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Yesterday, China issued Retaliatory Tariffs of 34%, on top of their already record-setting tariffs, illegal subsidies, and massive currency manipulation, despite my warning. Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase, the United States will impose additional tariffs of 50%.”

The announcement adds to the already heavy tariffs imposed by the US on China since Trump’s return to office in January. These measures have included two rounds of 10% tariffs on all Chinese imports, aimed partly at curbing the flow of illicit fentanyl into the United States.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the European Union expressed its readiness to negotiate with the US regarding the tariffs. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that the EU is open to talks and has offered to eliminate tariffs on industrial goods, a proposal she noted has been made “repeatedly.”

She also acknowledged the potential economic harm caused by the tariffs, stating that they come at a “massive cost” to US consumers and businesses. Despite this, the EU is preparing for retaliation, should negotiations fail.

As tensions rise, fears of a global recession continue to grow, with many questioning the long-term effects of the ongoing trade disputes.
