One of the newly announced BRICS partner country, Indonesia, is now aiming for a full membership in the economic union, Indonesian Ambassador to the Russian Federation Jose Antonio Morato Tavares has announced.
Speaking at the Russian State University for the Humanities’ conference dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia, Tavares said that they are “positive about the future of bilateral relations and “expect more dynamic relations [with the Russian Federation]” and that “Indonesia will be able to become a full member of the organization.”
Indonesia, according to the diplomat, is also negotiating with the Eurasian Economic Union to establish a free trade zone.
Previously at the BRICS summit 2024 Kazan, Indonesian foreign minister Sugiono stressed that “Indonesia’s membership in BRICS is a manifestation of its independent-active foreign policy,” and that it “doesn’t mean that we belong to certain bloc, but we participate actively in every forum.”
