Malaysia Taps BRICS Ties to Boost Trade and Investment

Although Malaysia has not yet become a full member of the BRICS group, it has benefited from its economic relations with the group’s countries

Malaysia has attracted over US$24 billion in investments from BRICS nations in 2024, according to data from the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI), marking a significant gain from its strategic partnership with the bloc.

Total trade between Malaysia and BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with newer members—reached RM818 billion (about US$193.5 billion), accounting for 35.2% of the country’s global trade.

Although not a full BRICS member, Malaysia has reaped considerable benefits from the partnership. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the significance of the alliance, stating:

“Although Malaysia has not yet become a full member of the BRICS group, it has benefited from its economic relations with the group’s countries, as most of these countries are trading partners and established sources of foreign investment in Malaysia.”

Anwar’s participation in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro underlined Malaysia’s commitment to the bloc’s principles of multilateralism and inclusivity. The Prime Minister also noted that the partnership allows Malaysia to explore deeper market access and strengthen regional supply chains, while evaluating full membership potential.

MITI added that Malaysia’s growing engagement with BRICS also supports national efforts to withstand protectionist pressures and economic fragmentation. The partnership, officials say, offers access to development in clean energy, digital technologies, and sustainable growth.

Malaysia’s upcoming role as ASEAN Chair in 2025 further positions it to foster stronger links between BRICS and Southeast Asia. Events such as the ASEAN AI Summit and Smart Cities Expo will host BRICS dialogue partners including China, India, and Russia.

With deepening economic ties and aligned strategic interests, Malaysia is positioning itself as a key regional bridge between BRICS and ASEAN, leveraging its partner status to attract capital, boost resilience, and expand its global influence.
