A potential face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump could mark a historic turning point in global diplomacy, according to senior Russian official Kirill Dmitriev.
The Kremlin has confirmed that preparations for the high-stakes summit are well underway, with a venue already selected and the meeting possibly taking place as early as next week.
“This can be a historic meeting,” Dmitriev wrote on X, formerly Twitter, emphasizing optimism with a dove emoji. “Dialogue will prevail.”
The latest momentum follows a visit to Moscow by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, which Trump described as an “unexpectedly positive” step toward resolving ongoing tensions, particularly around the Ukraine conflict. Witkoff reportedly floated the idea of a trilateral summit involving Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, though Moscow has remained silent on that proposal.
Putin, speaking to journalists after talks with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, suggested that the United Arab Emirates could be a “suitable” location for the summit. “One of our friends is the president of the United Arab Emirates. I think we will decide, but this would be one of the quite suitable places,” Putin said.
Although both sides acknowledge mutual interest in the summit, its broader implications remain complex. Trump, who campaigned as a “president of peace,” pledged to resolve the Ukraine crisis within 24 hours. However, he has since admitted that the conflict is “far more complex and challenging” than initially believed.
Moscow has stressed its preference for diplomacy, with Putin stating that Russia seeks to achieve its goals through peaceful means, not by freezing the conflict in its current state. Still, Russia remains wary of Zelensky’s legitimacy, noting that his presidential term expired in 2024 and no elections were held due to martial law.
“Who said what word first is no longer important,” Putin added, signaling a pragmatic approach to initiating dialogue.
As anticipation builds, the proposed summit could either pave the way for renewed diplomatic engagement or expose deeper rifts between global powers. Regardless of outcome, the meeting is set to become a defining moment in 21st-century geopolitics.
