The 2025 BRICS summit in Brazil may not have made global headlines, but its message was loud and clear: the Western-led world order is no longer the only game in town. With little fanfare, BRICS is gradually redrawing the contours of global power through financial reform, alternative institutions, and a new political narrative.
While the dollar still dominates, BRICS leaders are steadily pushing for de-dollarisation, a process long discussed but now actively pursued. Russia and China already conduct most of their trade in roubles and yuan, and India is increasingly using the rupee for deals with Iran, Sri Lanka, and the UAE.
“This isn’t just about transaction costs,” said one official at the summit. “It’s about sovereignty – reducing exposure to systems controlled by others.”
The New Development Bank (NDB) is one of BRICS’ key tools for change, offering loans in local currencies and with fewer political strings than the IMF or World Bank. At the summit, the group also revisited the idea of a common BRICS currency—still far off, but symbolically powerful.
The goal is not only financial independence but also a shift in the balance of global influence.
“This is about rewriting the rules of engagement,” said a Brazilian diplomat close to the summit. “We’re not anti-West. We just want a fairer system that reflects today’s realities.”
BRICS’ quiet challenge is not just material but ideological. Drawing on constructivist theory in international relations, BRICS is offering a new model of legitimacy—one rooted in mutual respect and non-interference, challenging Western assumptions about governance and development.
At the same time, realist logic explains much of the BRICS strategy. Power remains the central currency. The freezing of Russia’s reserves after the Ukraine invasion highlighted the risks of dollar dependence. BRICS members are responding not out of ideology, but survival.
While internal divisions remain—such as China-India border tensions and Brazil’s cautious stance toward anti-West alignment—the BRICS bloc is no longer seen as symbolic. Its pursuit of financial autonomy, institutional alternatives, and narrative control signals a deeper shift.
The Western-led order is not collapsing, but it is no longer unchallenged. BRICS isn’t tearing down the existing system. It’s building a parallel one—patiently, strategically, and with growing global attention.
