BRICS Eyes 2026 for Launch of Common Digital Currency, Signaling Global Monetary Shift

Although the currency’s official name and launch date remain unconfirmed, a structured multi-phase rollout is underway

The BRICS alliance is accelerating its pursuit of a shared digital currency, with experts forecasting a potential launch window between 2026 and 2027. Amid growing instability in the global monetary system and rising skepticism toward the U.S. dollar’s dominance, this initiative could redefine international finance.

At the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil in July 2025, bloc members reaffirmed their commitment to monetary cooperation. They endorsed increased trade in local currencies and fast-tracked development of BRICS Pay, the group’s unified payment infrastructure.

“The momentum is undeniable,” said Dr. Leila Huang, an international finance researcher. “BRICS is building the foundation for a new monetary order — one that prioritizes sovereignty, resilience, and regional integration.”

Although the currency’s official name and launch date remain unconfirmed, a structured multi-phase rollout is underway. A key component is intensified use of local currencies in cross-border trade. Russia and China are leading with the ruble and yuan, while India expands rupee settlements across the Global South.

The BRICS Pay system is central to this vision. Designed to bypass traditional payment systems like SWIFT, it leverages blockchain technology to enable secure, interoperable, and decentralized transactions between central banks and users.

“Member states are actively building sophisticated payment systems,” a BRICS official confirmed, adding that several pilot programs for central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are planned by 2026 to test multilateral compatibility.

The bloc’s recent expansion — now representing 46% of the global population and 37% of world GDP — significantly boosts the credibility of a shared monetary platform. The declared dedollarization goal adds urgency, especially in energy and commodity markets.

However, challenges remain. Success hinges on bridging diverse economic models, ensuring political stability, and building trust in a currency that, for now, is only conceptual.

Still, the BRICS digital currency project represents more than a symbolic break from the dollar. If realized, it could offer emerging economies a viable alternative, recalibrate pricing mechanisms in key sectors, and push the world closer to a multipolar monetary landscape.
