Putin Orders Major Conscription Push Amidst Crucial Ukraine Conflict

This marks a rise of 10,000 recruits compared to last year’s spring draft and an increase of more than 15,000 compared to three years ago.

In a significant move to bolster Russia’s military forces, President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree authorizing one of the largest rounds of conscription in years. Starting Tuesday, 160,000 Russian men, aged 18 to 30, will be drafted into the armed forces in what is the latest phase of the country’s routine conscription cycle.

This marks a rise of 10,000 recruits compared to last year’s spring draft and an increase of more than 15,000 compared to three years ago.

The expanded conscription comes at a critical juncture in the ongoing war with Ukraine, as Russian forces continue their ground operations in eastern Ukraine and attempt to repel Ukrainian advances in the Kursk region. The increased recruitment is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Russia’s military, which has grown from 1 million personnel three years ago to approximately 1.5 million today.

While conscription itself is not unusual in Russia, the timing of this push raises significant questions. Reports indicate that, despite official policy stating conscripts are not sent directly to combat zones, many have been pressured into signing contracts for deployment to the front lines in Ukraine.

This shift has drawn international scrutiny, especially after conscripts found themselves under attack in the Kursk region during a Ukrainian incursion in August 2024.

As the conflict continues to evolve, Moscow is also seeking diplomatic channels to end the war. Senior Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev is expected to visit Washington this week for talks with U.S. officials, signaling a rare moment of diplomatic engagement between the two nations since the 2022 invasion.

However, despite these efforts, Putin has made it clear that any ceasefire must be contingent on lifting U.S. sanctions, further complicating the path to peace.
