China’s rapid innovation and large-scale manufacturing in renewable energy technologies have dramatically lowered global clean power costs, transforming the world’s energy landscape.
Over the past decade, the nation’s advancements have contributed to a 60% drop in wind energy prices and an 80% decline in solar photovoltaic (PV) costs, according to Wang Hongzhi, head of China’s National Energy Administration (NEA).
Speaking at the International Forum on Energy Transition in Suzhou, Wang emphasized that “China has built the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system, becoming a leader and source of innovation in energy technology.”
Today, the country accounts for nearly half of the world’s installed wind and solar capacity, solidifying its status as the global hub of renewable energy development.
China’s leadership has not only accelerated domestic progress but also reshaped international energy markets. Over the past decade, Beijing has partnered with more than 100 countries and regions to advance renewable projects, contributing to an estimated 2.65 billion tonnes reduction in global carbon dioxide emissions in the past year alone.
Experts credit China’s dominance in the production of solar modules, battery cells, and related components for creating economies of scale that make clean energy increasingly affordable worldwide.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has noted that China’s vast expansion in renewables is “the primary reason clean energy is now affordable across much of the world.” This influence extends beyond manufacturing; Beijing’s policies, R&D investments, and green finance mechanisms have set a global benchmark for cost-effective energy transition.
Yi Yuechun, deputy head of the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute, said that the country’s robust R&D and production networks “provide high-quality and efficient products and solutions for both domestic and international markets.”
Looking ahead, China plans to deepen institutional reforms and promote new business models such as advanced energy storage and virtual power plants. These initiatives aim to enhance synergy between market innovation and policy efficiency—cementing China’s role as a catalyst in the global shift toward a low-carbon future.
