Brazil Sets Ambitious Target to Quadruple Biofuel Production by 2035

The Declaration aligns with the collective climate finance goal adopted at COP29, aiming to mobilize at least US$1.3 trillion annually by 2035 to support developing nations

Brazil has unveiled a bold plan to quadruple its biofuel production by 2035, reinforcing its global leadership in clean energy and sustainable agribusiness. The announcement came from Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira de Oliveira during the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil.

Silveira confirmed that 19 countries have already joined Brazil’s initiative, underscoring the international support behind the country’s energy transition goals.

“This strategy strengthens the position of agribusiness, enables a more effective response to climate change, and drives forward the energy transition. As a result, we are not only countering global warming but also making our economy stronger,” he stated.

The minister emphasized that Brazil’s energy policy, guided by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is a cornerstone of the nation’s sustainable development strategy.

“President Lula has done fundamental work as a great global leader in these international discussions,” Silveira added, highlighting the government’s commitment to reshaping the global energy matrix.

The announcement coincided with the signing of the Belém Declaration, endorsed by 44 parties, which addresses climate change, hunger, and poverty through targeted financing and stronger social protection systems. The Declaration aligns with the collective climate finance goal adopted at COP29, aiming to mobilize at least US$1.3 trillion annually by 2035 to support developing nations.

Silveira also stressed that Brazil’s biofuel push complements the growing field of electromobility rather than competing with it.

“The transition has two pillars: climate change and the economic one. It is a great opportunity, including for a country like Brazil, which is gigantic by its very nature,” he concluded.

With its vast agricultural base and renewable potential, Brazil is positioning itself as a model for the global clean energy transition.
