A new Expert in Human Rights Program has been launched today by the Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights Commission in a first initiative of its kind to enhance the Kingdom’s national expertise in the field, Arab News reports.

The newly inaugurated 250-hour curriculum was developed by the Majmaah University in cooperation with the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders and the UN Institute for Training and Research

Aiming to build a strong understanding of human rights, the program blends theory and practice that will earn the graduates foundational, expert and trainer qualifications, among others. Out of the first cohort of 130 people, 50 will advance to higher levels.

“Saudi Arabia can play a leadership role in the multilateral arena by moving from theory to practice through international cooperation,” says the UN assistant secretary-general and executive director of the UN institute, Nikhil Seth.

Praising the collaboration he branded important in promoting Saudi and international human rights, Seth also highlighted the “transformative power of human rights training in promoting peace, justice, and equality”.

“Training equips individuals and institutions to actively contribute to a more equitable and rights-respecting society,” he noted.
