Despite the European Union’s commitment to eliminate its dependence on Russian gas, it still flows in the bloc, a European Commission spokesperson has admitted today.
“Russian energy – particularly gas – is still present in the EU,” Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, the EC spokesperson for climate action and energy, said at Monday’s press briefing, noting that the EC plans to issue next month or in mid-March “a roadmap aimed at completely ending Russian energy imports.”
Russian export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to EU rose by more than 10% in annual terms in the first two weeks of 2025 “after they purchased 837,300 metric tons of the super-chilled gas,” Politico reported, citing data by commodities data provider Kpler.
As per Itkonen’s statement, the EU’s Russian gas imports increased in 2024 too, with Russia being the second-biggest supplier of LNG after the US.
