The White House confirmed Friday that US President will stick to his February 1 deadline and will impose on Saturday aggressive new tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada whose economies might face widespread effects.

“I can confirm that, tomorrow, the February 1 deadline President Trump put into place with a statement several weeks ago continues,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt noted during Friday’s briefing.

The tariffs, according to Leavitt, would amount to a 10% on China and 25% duty on Canada and Mexico “for illegal fentanyl they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country, which has killed tens of millions of Americans.”

“These are promises made and promises kept by the president,” Leavitt underscored, avoiding to  provide details on how precisely the new tariffs would be implemented.
