India has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing 1 billion tonnes in coal production, a significant achievement that underscores the nation’s commitment to meeting its growing energy demands. With advanced mining technologies and efficient practices, India has not only increased its coal output but also prioritized sustainability in its mining processes.
In a post on X, PM Narendra Modi said, “A Proud Moment for India! Crossing the monumental milestone of 1 Billion tonnes of coal production is a remarkable achievement, highlighting our commitment to energy security, economic growth and self-reliance. This feat also reflects the dedication and hard work of all those associated with the sector.”
Coal remains a cornerstone of India’s energy landscape, accounting for about 55% of the nation’s energy mix. Nearly 74% of India’s power generation relies on thermal power plants, making a robust and sustainable coal sector essential.
India holds the world’s fifth-largest geological coal reserves and is the second-largest global consumer of coal, further emphasizing its vital role in energy security.
The coal sector has demonstrated impressive growth, with a 5.3% increase in production in December 2024 compared to the previous year. This growth is contributing to India’s economic expansion, as coal also plays a crucial role in generating around 50% of Indian Railways’ freight revenue and provides employment to nearly 478,000 people.
Additionally, the sector is embracing environmental responsibility, with large-scale afforestation efforts, including planting over 54 lakh saplings in 2024. The government is also focused on coal gasification as part of its strategy to ensure long-term energy security, with a target of 100 million tonnes by 2030.
With these efforts, India is not only strengthening its coal industry but also ensuring a sustainable and energy-secure future for the nation.
