Ethiopia is taking significant steps toward modernizing its agricultural sector with the launch of the Ethiopian Seed Platform (ESP). Announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, the platform will be piloted later this year, marking a key phase in the country’s digital agriculture initiative.

This move is part of Ethiopia’s broader effort to transform its farming landscape, streamline the seed sector, and enhance agricultural productivity.

The primary goal of the initiative is to double the production of improved seeds, increasing output from 1 million to 2 million quintals. With over 69% of the target already achieved this year, the platform is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for quality seeds, which has been a persistent challenge for Ethiopia’s agricultural development.

Minister of Agriculture Girma Amente emphasized that digitalization in agriculture is a central component of the government’s strategic plans. He underscored that the full implementation of the Ethiopian Seed Platform will not only improve seed production but will also enhance coordination among various stakeholders in the sector. The pilot project will focus on testing the platform’s effectiveness, with plans for nationwide rollout in the coming years.

The Ministry recently hosted a forum in Adama, gathering regional and national seed coordination committees to discuss the platform and its potential. Amente urged stakeholders to engage proactively in the discussions, highlighting the need for timely seed data to support effective decision-making.

Mohammed Hassena, Project Manager at the Ethiopian Seed Platform, also pointed out the importance of stronger coordination and high-level engagement in addressing the challenges within the seed sector.

With the Ethiopian Seed Platform, Ethiopia aims to ensure a digitally empowered future for its farmers, driving agricultural innovation and fostering sustainable growth in the sector.
