Built to deliver Russian gas to Germany and the rest of Western Europe, the Russian pipeline Nord Stream’s progress was disrupted in September 2022 by explosions in the Baltic Sea but Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is convinced a US investor will buy it in less than a year and restart its work.
In an interview on Friday with the German news outlet Handelsblatt, Vucic shared his view about the future of the sabotaged pipeline he believes will continue transporting and gas supplies from Russia to the EU.
“I dare to predict: In a year at the latest, Nord Stream will be owned by an American investor, and gas will flow from Russia to Europe through the pipeline,” the Serbian leader said. “Mark my words. One year until Nord Stream is up and running!”
US financier and investor Stephen Lynch had actually asked the US Treasury Department for a permission to buy Nord Stream 2 if it is put up for auction next year, presenting the possibility as a strategic opportunity for long-term US interests.
