Mexico’s tourism sector continues to thrive, with a notable 10% increase in international visitors recorded in May 2025 compared to the same month last year.

According to data released by Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the country welcomed over 3.75 million foreign tourists in May alone, reflecting a steady post-pandemic recovery and growing global interest in Mexico as a travel destination.

The total number of visitors entering Mexico in May reached 7,938,444—a significant 18% rise from May 2024. Nearly half of these, or 47.3%, were international tourists who spent at least one night in the country. INEGI stated:

“In May 2025, 7,938,444 visitors entered the country, 18 percent more than in the same month of 2024. Of this number, 3,751,180 (47.3 percent) were international tourists, 10 percent higher than the same month a year earlier.”

In addition to the surge in visitor numbers, tourism revenue also saw growth. Total spending by international tourists in May reached nearly US$2.62 billion, a 6.3% year-on-year increase. The average expenditure per visitor stood at approximately US$330, highlighting the economic impact of tourism on local businesses and services.

Mexico’s vibrant cultural heritage, diverse natural landscapes, and expanding hospitality industry continue to attract global travellers. In 2024, the country hosted around 45 million international tourists, earning it the sixth spot globally in tourist arrivals, according to the United Nations International Tourism Agency.

With ongoing investments in infrastructure and tourism promotion, Mexico is poised to maintain its upward trajectory, further cementing its reputation as one of the world’s top travel destinations.
