Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have launched three major joint tourism projects, signaling a new era of cooperation between the two nations. Announced by Nigeria’s Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, the projects include the “Coco Beach” resort in Lagos, a cultural centre in Abuja, and a flagship Rotana Hotel to be built either in Abuja or Lagos.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the UAE-Africa Tourism Investment Summit 2025 in Dubai, Musawa said:
“Tourism cooperation between the UAE and Nigeria represents a promising opportunity to achieve mutual benefits between the two countries, given the distinguished tourism and investment potential of both sides.”
According to the minister, construction on the Coco Beach project is already underway, with 12% of work completed. The partnership aims to strengthen bilateral relations while attracting more Emirati investment into Nigeria’s growing tourism and creative economy.
Musawa emphasized that tourism is a strategic priority in Nigeria’s economic diversification plan. With the country seeking to reduce dependence on oil revenues, initiatives like these are expected to stimulate job creation, improve infrastructure, and enhance Nigeria’s global tourism appeal.
She also noted that improved transportation and safety standards are part of the government’s broader efforts to make the country a leading destination in Africa. The UAE, with its global tourism experience and financial capacity, is viewed as a key partner in achieving this goal.
As Musawa highlighted, the success of these ventures will not only deepen Nigeria-UAE relations but also “open new horizons for cultural and creative collaboration.”
