Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian have officially signed in Moscow on Friday 20-year Strategic Partnership Agreement that guarantees the security of the two countries, according to the Kremlin.

The landmark document, as the two leaders have said, provides a new impetus to Russia-Iran bilateral ties and covers areas ranging from defense and energy cooperation to culture and science, replacing the previous cooperation deal signed back in 2001.

Calling the new agreement “a breakthrough document” for the stable development of both Russia and Iran, as well as the entire region, Putin noted that it sets ambitious goals.

“This is precisely the meaning of the signed interstate agreement on comprehensive strategic partnership. It sets ambitious goals and outlines guidelines for deepening bilateral cooperation in the long term. In politics and security, in trade and investment, and humanitarian areas. And this truly breakthrough document aims to create the conditions for stable and sustainable development of Russia and Iran, our entire common Eurasian region,” Putin said.

According to Pezeshkian, the new deal “provides a new opportunity for Brics and SCO to provide new opportunities for interaction”.

“We have carried out a full review of all our issues and discussed the entire spectrum of our relations. We have tried to remove all the obstacles in the way of expanding relations,” the Iranian president said.
