Deadly Clashes Surge on Cambodia–Thailand Border Amid Disputed Temple Tensions

The twin historic temples—Ta Muen Thom on Cambodia’s side and Prasat Preah Vihear on Thailand’s—have long symbolized nationalist rivalry

Intense border clashes erupted today between Thai and Cambodian forces near the contested Ta Muen Thom/Prasat Preah Vihear temple area, marking the bloodiest escalation since 2011. Heavy weapons—including artillery and BM‑21 rocket launchers—were used, followed by Thai F‑16 airstrikes.

Thai health officials reported at least 11 civilians and one soldier killed, with dozens more wounded, including children. In one shocking incident, a rocket struck a gas station in Sisaket province, killing an eight-year-old boy and others.

“Artillery shell fell on people’s homes,” noted district chief Sutthirot Charoenthanasak, who added that some hospitals required evacuation after being hit .

Both sides accuse each other of initiating the violence. Thai authorities assert Cambodian forces fired first after Urdu‑detecting a drone near their posts . Cambodia, however, described its response as “strictly within the bounds of self‑defence” following an alleged Thai armed incursion that violated Cambodian sovereign territory .

Thailand responded by recalling its ambassador and sealing all border crossings with Cambodia . Cambodia reciprocated by expelling the Thai envoy and downgrading diplomatic ties, accusing Thailand of launching “military aggression” and bombarding civilian areas . Phnom Penh has called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting.

Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai emphasized caution, stating, “We have to be careful…We will follow international law,” and ruled out formal war . Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen confirmed via video link that Cambodia would “fight back” while condemning Thailand’s airstrikes as reckless .

The twin historic temples—Ta Muen Thom on Cambodia’s side and Prasat Preah Vihear on Thailand’s—have long symbolized nationalist rivalry. The International Court of Justice affirmed Cambodia’s claim in 2013, yet deadly skirmishes persist.

Regional and global powers, including ASEAN’s Malaysia and Western nations, have urged restraint and dialogue. The U.S. Embassy has warned citizens to avoid the border region.

As both militaries reinforce positions and evacuate tens of thousands of civilians, diplomats warn that without swift conflict resolution, the standoff risks spiraling into a broader clash—stoking fears of a prolonged crisis in Southeast Asia.
