Bloomberg: Russian Ruble Rallies to Become 2025’s Best-Performing Currency

Meanwhile, the ruble’s rise comes as the US dollar weakens, weighed down by tariff hikes announced by President Trump

The Russian ruble has defied expectations and emerged as the world’s strongest currency so far in 2025, according to data from Bloomberg. With a 38% surge against the US dollar, the ruble has even outpaced traditional safe-haven assets like gold, which has risen 23% year-to-date.

Analysts attribute this performance to a unique combination of domestic monetary policy and global geopolitical shifts. Unlike other emerging-market currencies, the ruble has been largely insulated from capital outflows thanks to strict capital controls implemented by Russian authorities.

“Capital controls have largely shielded Russia from global investor retreat,” said Sofya Donets, an economist at T-Investments.

A key factor behind the ruble’s strength is the Bank of Russia’s aggressive interest rate strategy. The central bank hiked its benchmark rate to a record 21% in October and has maintained it, curbing inflation and limiting import demand. This has reduced the need for foreign currency, supporting the ruble further. Additionally, regulations requiring exporters to convert part of their foreign revenue into rubles have increased demand for the domestic currency.

Geopolitical developments have also played a role. Improved US-Russia diplomatic ties, particularly in joint efforts toward resolving the Ukraine conflict, have attracted international investors back to Russian markets. Iskander Lutsko of Istar Capital noted that investors are seeking high-yield ruble assets through Russia-friendly nations.

Meanwhile, the ruble’s rise comes as the US dollar weakens, weighed down by tariff hikes announced by President Trump. While most tariffs are paused for now, investor confidence in US assets has taken a hit — a contrast to Russia’s current economic trajectory.

With no immediate signs of a rate cut and continued capital controls, analysts expect the ruble’s rally to hold steady in the months ahead.
