Amid growing tensions and pressure from the US over BRICS plans to reduce the dependence on US dollar in trade, Rio de Janeiro will host on July 6-7 the leaders from the burgeoning group’s members and associate members for a new summit.
“We will make very important decisions for the development of all these countries, for cooperation and for improving the living conditions of all their inhabitants,” Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said on X, adding that “the summit will include representatives from 20 countries with full or associate membership.”
BRICS members – Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, India, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UAE – will participate in all meetings whereas the partner countries of BRICS – Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan – will participate only in the BRICS Foreign Ministers and Leaders’ Summit. They may also be invited on other meetings but only if there is consensus among the member countries.
